The role of the Special Economic Zone of the Interoceanic Multimodal Corridor and the Mayan train: Mexico's development strategy and experience of China's

Abstract

One of the most ambitious projects of President López Obrador’s government is the Interoceanic Intermodal Corridor as a detonator of industrial and technological development capable of creating regional and international value chains. We consider that this project is framed as a Mexican Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the country, which will lead to endogenous development, generating greater economic, financial, technological and political relations from the Gulf, Pacific Ocean and the North with countries from Asia, the USA and Europe, and to the south with the countries of Central America mainly. This initiative is designed in response to the exhaustion of commercial operations of the Panama Canal. The objective of the work is to analyze the intermodal corridor as a SEZ where projects such as the Mayan Train and others in the interior of the country also influence. In this regard, China has great interest in participating in this megaproject to create new consumption markets and extraction of mineral resources. .
